Over a dozen Sierra Club members and I spent a perfect Saturday surrounded by energizing music and people at the 26th Annual Sioux River Folk Festival in Newton Hills State Park, South Dakota. Along with 1,100 other extended family members we enjoyed acoustic music, long conversations, and campfire jam sessions into the wee hours. As you can see in the photo, long-time Sierra Club member Norma Wilson knows how to toss a baton to the tune of just about anything---even bluegrass! The phrase "can't see the forest for the trees" sometimes applies to those of us who work to save the forest, the open spaces, natural resources or the rights of citizens. It's not difficult to obsess with the "Protect" part of the Sierra Club logo to the point of breathing and sleeping the challenge of conservation work. This call to Sierra Club great and small, volunteers and staff , to document how they spent August 6 probably had more than a few reacting with an, "Omigod, I was just going to camp/kayak/garden/bike with some friends." Then, because of the request, we thought about those pleasurable activities and realized "Enjoy" is part of our banner, too!
