I shall be leading a bicycle outing for our group September 18 on some new trails in our community. In particular we have a new "Trestle Trail" utilizing an abandoned railroad bridge across a wide section of the Fox River. The river divides the land, making it impossible for hikers and bikers to enjoy the network of trails being built on both sides. This trail is mostly open now, but formally opening August 27.
My wife and I biked this trail and explored the adjacent Friendship Trail. (When complete, that trail will run 110 miles and connect a number of trails together.) We bicycled 19 miles together, enjoying the new trail segments and a picnic lunch carried in my saddle bags. The view from the trestle bridge of the Fox River is spectacular; a view normally seen only by boat. I saw wetland preserves I did not know existed. The trail was built as part of a city revitalization project, but it will very much benefit recreationalists. And as a transportation link it offers alternatives to crossing the river by car.
