Although I'm not much more than a pagan-Buddhist hybrid when it comes to spirituality, I began today in silent prayer in remembrance of those victims of the horrid bombing of Hiroshima 60 years ago. I believe we must honor their memories to help ensure that another nuclear holocaust never happens. Such devastation surely penetrates the very soul of our planet and all things past, present, and future that inhabit it. For what would happen to our glorious planet if we do not remember and learn from the mistakes of the past? Even a fraction of the nuclear bombs in arsenals around the world could easily wipe out every species on earth in the flash of an eye.
The "pagan" part of me that worships this earth with my entire being spends too much time worrying about such things when I should be focusing on the colored patterns of butterfly wings -- or the intricate graphics on turtles' backs, or the rainbows in the spray from waterfalls, or the wondrous shapes of red rocks that line the canyons of the American West.
Today I am flying across country looking down at patchwork landscapes and contemplating the effects of pesticides on the fields below. I look for "awareness" in the eyes of travelers, just one kindred spirit who feels the same way. I know our numbers are great!
Together we can honor the past, become aware of the present, and protect the future. Becoming aware is the key ... and for that, this "Every Day Matters" campaign could not be more apropos to the task at hand. The photo on this pages show the spot where I do most of my remembering, honoring, and earth-worship -- right outside my front door. I feel so lucky to be able to call this home.
