My Saturday morning started with a weekend ritual: walking the dog to Starbucks to pick up coffee (I bring my own mug) and the newspaper. In the Boston Globe, I am encouraged to find an editorial on public transportation by our former governor Michael Dukakis. Mike has been one the most outspoken proponents for a rail link between Boston's North and Sourth Stations, an issue the local Sierra Club has been working on for more than ten years. Thank you, Mike!
After reading the local news, I pulled my bicycle out to assess some damage incurred the last time I was on it. Although I have a backup -- a cool little folding model from Strida.com -- my Vermont-made Terry is my primary transportation for errands around the Boston/Cambridge area. The required repairs and parts indicated professional help so I took it on the MBTA to the shop, where I had to leave it. On the way home I picked up organic groceries and packed them into my own bags. At this time of the year, I buy all my produce at local farmers' markets.
This afternoon I will write up minutes for the July Greater Boston ExComm meeting and do some research for a week-long service trip I am leading on the lower Cape in September. It is a beautiful summer day, and I will take the Strida out for a spin later, after the heat of the day passes.
In the meantime, it is good to be inside with my nonhuman housemates: a Greyhound, grey cat, and two Cockatiels (also mainly grey!) -- all adopted except for one of the Cockatiels.
