I walked around the Lafayette Reservoir early this morning, before the high heat got started. I try to do it every Saturday but I've been out of town every weekend in July. It was like being with an old friend. There were many walkers and, as always, ducks, a few Canada geese. Occasionally I'll see deer, wild turkeys, blue herons, egrets. Still, for me it is a time of solitude, pondering the world at large, planning a bit, but mostly enjoying the experience. I'm grateful for the people who made the reservoir unique, for the 2.7 miles of pleasure I appreciate and savor.

My wife was the leader of a Girl Scout troop whose main interest was backpacking. I spent many years helping her on the week-long trips, and learned to love the Sierra. Deeply! I had grown up in a different environment (there's that word) back East and thought that if God wanted us to sleep in the jungle he wouldn't have allowed us to invent the inner spring mattress. Short sighted, to say the least. A couple of years in the Infantry didn't help, either.

I think of the selfless people who have worked so hard to actively pursue saving this precious heritage and I feel indebted to them. I've been so busy with other responsibilities I haven't done much more than write letters to politicians when asked to by the Club. Oh, and I separate my garbage, too.

I think it's time for me to do more.
