Saturday began at 4:30 a.m. for me at Consultation Lake on the Mt. Whitney trail. We began hiking at 5:45, heading up the famous 97 switchbacks to the top of trail crest. Four hours later, I was at the top of the Sierra, having hiked up the tallest mountain in the United States, outside of Alaska.
Bunches of blue sky pilot flowers kept me company as I kept "putting one foot in front of the other." At the top, a yellow-bellied marmot was scrambling from one pile of rocks to another, and small birds were flitting back and forth.
I thought, "This is what it is all about -- keeping places like this wild, so everyone can come to enjoy them."
