This generation of kids will be facing some tough environmental challenges -- global warming, increasing oil dependence, decreasing wildlands. They'll need all the tools possible to combat these challenges. I take my children outdoors as much as possible in order to give them the appreciation of nature that they'll need in order to grow up to be responsible citizens.

This Saturday I was camping with them at Mt. Lassen National Park. They went hiking, swam in the lake, climbed on boulders, chased butterflies, roasted marshmallows over a fire they helped build, got dirty, and generally had fun outdoors. I hope that they grow up to do the same things with their children, and that the appreciation of the natural world that they are developing at a young age will last a lifetime.
