I went to the beach with my family today. My four-year-old spent her time burying herself in the sand, while my one-year-old showed off her new skill -- standing up. The soft sand was a perfect place for her to practice, much better than the concrete that makes up the backyard in our urban home.
I remember reading an article a few years ago about how children learn environmental responsibility -- not by being made to feel guilty, but simply by being outside. Kids learn to love nature just by spending time surrounded by it.
Today was all about just being outside. No television, no toys, no driving back and forth all over town. Just me and my babies, the sand and the water...no batteries or assembly required.
