My plan was an early start to the day with a hike along a favorite stretch of Darby Creek with our two dogs. Then I would get my son -- just home, moving his things back from college -- to help me take a load to the recycling center in the next county over, things my town doesn't accept -- scrap metal, plastic plant pots, lids to bottles, etc. But last night I stubbed my toe pretty hard -- I think I broke it -- so I decided on a more leisurely approach to the day.

I went to the farmers' market and was delighted to see that they still had locally grown blueberries -- the last of the season -- and blackberries, too. Special treat for my son. And me! I spent some morning time at my desk, finishing the paperwork for Darby Creek watershed organization's petition for eligibility for state watershed restoration grants. There I am in the photo, heading off to the P.O. with the petition packet in my backpack.

Afterwards, I lugged a few boxes of my son's belongings, and then did a little Sierra Club email work before heading out to the garden for a couple of hours. Happily, I came across not one, but two mature praying mantises in the tall grass, probably from the several mantis egg cases I found last spring, on native shrubs I had planted in the garden. Late in the still warm afternoon, the dogs and I headed off for a gentler walk, on account of my toe, along the creek to a wonderful swimming hole scoured out where floodwaters felled a tree. The water is a little deeper than I am tall, and feels so refreshing on a hot, summer afternoon. Sorry, no photo!
