I took a short hike in City Park -- a 1,500-acre green space in the middle of New Orleans. While walking through a portion of the park -- in the middle of large 700-year-old oak trees -- I was reminded about how so many of our urban and suburban areas have become vast expanses of paved concrete and urban sprawl. City Park has problems. Recently, there has been a very major effort through formation of a master plan to make the park more viable -- more green. The park's south golf course has been shut down and is going to be put -- finally -- back into general use. This is a start. We need to make our living areas -- whether urban, suburban, or rural -- much more livable across the board.
